Compare and Contrast

I watched the movie 'Brave' and in the movie, Merida has to marry compulsorily and she wants to change her mom. Now, I want to compare and contrast the main character, Merida to myself.

Merida is a princess of an ancient kingdom in Scotland. But even though she is a princess, she is not calm or quiet. Unlike other princesses in other stories and movies, she is really active and energetic. Her favorite hobby is horseback archery instead of embroidering on a dresses. She also doesn't obey her parents(king and queen) meekly. When her mother makes her marry for political reasons, she refused it strongly and even argued with the queen.

Princess Merida and I have some similarities. First, we both like to play sports. For example, she enjoys riding horses and I also really like to ride horses. I rode a horse every time I went to Jeju island. And I enjoyed riding fast unlike a child of that age.

Second, Merida and I both love our family very much. Even though Merida doesn't obey her parents and sometimes fights, it doesn't mean that she doesn't love them. She fought against Mor'du, a monster that can kill her in one bite, to protect her mom. Also, she argued with her father who didn't know that the bear was his wife Elinor and tried to kill her. I love my family in my heart and I know Merida also does.

There are also some differences between Merida and me. The first big difference is that Merida is a princess of a kingdom but I am just a common girl. She has her own horse and everything is always ready for her because she is a 'Princess' different from me. However, I have advantages over her. I have freedom. Merida has to wear extremely tight dresses, manage everyone's eyes and be a model for all the people.

Second, in the story, Merida decides to change her mom using a magical drug. Her mom, Elinor becomes a bear. Even it was not her intention to change Elinor into a bear, I can't understand how can she give her mom a magical drug. Moreover, the drug was not a verified one. It can be dangerous and harmful for her mom.

Like this, Merida and I have some similarities and differences. She and I enjoy sports and also love families. However, she is a princess but I am just a common girl. And she gave her mom a magical drug that was not attested but I will never give my mom strange drugs even if she has different thoughts with me.

  1. Aerim,

You did a good job comparing and contrasting yourself to Merida. I think the introduction is too short though. You should say a little about what the movie was about. The essay is not quite long enough.
